John P. Webster Library!*

 

events are FREE unless otherwise mentioned. We ask that you register to secure a spot!

 

The John P. Webster Library (JPWL), along with First Church’s pastoral staff, sponsors frequent programs for adults. Programs on mental wellness, Islam, memoir-writing, antiracism, climate change, social justice, home improvement, and gardening are just a few of the topics we have explored in recent years. Some programs are offered in person in our beautiful facility, and others have a Zoom option.

SUMMER FAITH ON FILM SERIES

1-3:30 p.m. Mondays, July 13, 20, & 27 in the air conditioned JPW Library

This series explores the search for compassion and acceptance across cultures, lifestyles, and beliefs. Screenings are followed by a discussion of the films.  Free – BYOS (Bring Your Own Snacks)

 

July 13 The Lady in the Van Starring Maggie Smith; based on a memoir by Alan Bennet. The true story of one man’s strained friendship with an eccentric homeless woman who he befriended before allowing her temporarily to park her van in his driveway. She stayed there for 15 years. He eventually learns that the woman is a former gifted pupil of a famous pianist, and that she has led a remarkable life! Rated PG-13. Running time: 1h 44m. Trailer here.

 

 

 

 

 

 

July 20 The Old Oak When a group of Syrian refugees moves to a once thriving mining village in northern England, prejudice fuels a rift between the community and its newest inhabitants. But an unlikely friendship between the owner of the local pub and a young Syrian woman offers new possibilities for the divided village. Not Rated. Running time: 1h 53m. July 27 Cabrini After witnessing disease and poverty in the slums of New York, Italian immigrant Sr. Francesca Cabrini embarks on a daring journey to persuade the hostile mayor to provide housing and healthcare for hundreds of orphaned children. Cabrini was canonized as the first American citizen saint in 1946. Rated PG-13. Running time: 2h 22m. Trailer here.
