Information on how to register and who wants to car pool will be available soon.
The campaigns being launched will focus on improving housing affordability, updating State fiscal policy, combating racial and religious hate, and reclaiming the former MIRA trash-to-energy site.
Here is a message from GHIAA Organizer Marika Stewart, following up on GHIAA’s educational equity campaign win last year.
Hello GHIAA Leaders,
During the last legislative session, we partnered to fight for fair education funding reform – and we succeeded! We saw $150 million added to this year and full funding for the Education Cost Sharing Formula next year. This was a huge investment in our students and a major step to end inequality in our education system.
But now, Gov. Lamont is trying to take back this historic victory for CT students. In his new proposed budget, Gov. Lamont is removing 50% of new funding for K-12 education in the coming fiscal year. The ECS was calculated to identify how much money is needed to fully fund K-12 education in our state. Taking back the new funding commitment is a decision to knowingly underfund CT schools. Hartford Public Schools alone would lose $11 million of vital funding.
Action Steps:
- Reach out to your legislators: Tell them you care about K-12 education funding reform. Ask them to hold strong and reject the Governor’s proposed budget. Our colleagues at School + State Finance Project have created an easy online way to Submit Written Testimony Today!
- Press Conference: Rep. Curry, Sen. McCrory, and the School + State Finance Project will be hosting a press Conference on Thursday, February 15 at 1:15pm, in Legislative Office Building (LOB). Any GHIAA Clergy, Core Team leaders, or GHIAA Institution members particularly concerned about this topic are welcome to attend.
We will keep you informed as this develops and we identify additional ways to have an impact. Please reply to me at mstewart@cljct.org with any questions.
Have A Great Day,
Marika Stewart
